SPA Q&A  |  YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

When getting a facial, how and when do I say NO to an "extraction"?

If you have ever had a facial, you've likely heard the term "extraction" - this procedure removes pore-clogging sebum. Some people might find an extraction quite painful whilst others hardly feel anything. When you're about to get your facial and the thought of an extraction sends you into a slight panic, its best to be straight forward with the therapist before getting started. Keep in mind that this is all about you - you are paying for a service and should feel comfortable enjoying it. Tell the therapist politely that you would rather not have "extractions" done or anything else that you don't enjoy. This will put your mind at ease and allow you to enjoy your treatment.

  SPA TERMINOLOGY
ALGOTHERAPY A form of thalassotherapy (water therapy)where thin layers of heated seaweed are applied to the skin; infra-red lamps are used in the treatment to maintain the heat of the prepared seaweed. Treatment reduces pain and functions as an anti-inflammatory.
DIFFERENT MASSAGE STYLES AND SIDE EFFECTS
Swedish
This method of massaging is the most popular type of massage and includes a variety of strokes. This type of massage is beneficial to promote the feeling of well-being and also helps to reduce emotional and physical stress.

Neuromuscular massage
This way of massaging forms the basis of aromatherapy massage and is also referred to as "Trigger point" therapy and the overall effect of this massage is to restore the balance of the autonomic nervous system.

Lymphatic massage
This massage helps to improve the flow of lymph and some techniques developed by Marguerite Maury are incorporated in aromatherapy massage. Lymph drainage massage is particularly useful in detoxifying the body and to boost the immune system.

Acupressure massage and Shiatsu
This method of massage is focused on the meridians (channels) of the body and to relieve "blockages" through pressure on certain points of the body. It can be performed while the person is fully clothed and requires no needles such as in acupuncture.

Reflexology
In reflexology the feet (although the rest of the body can also be used) are manipulated and massaged and focus is placed on certain points on the feet that are said to have corresponding body parts or organs.

Hot Stone Massage
Hot and smooth lava rocks help to decrease tension in this massage. Your therapist uses the hot stones as a massage tool. Heated to more or less 45 degrees, the stones slide up and down your skin, heating and soothing away tension as they go.

Side effects of massage
Most people feel relaxed and pampered after a massage, both mentally and physically. Sometimes, however, the side effects of a massage can be quite unpleasant, depending on the condition your body is in and how often you are getting a massage.

The massage works to remove toxins and increase blood supply, these toxins are released into the blood stream. This can sometimes result in typical detox symptoms: sinus, headaches and even nausea. If you don't get a massage often it is possible that you'll feel bruised the next day. It is advisable to request a massage that's more mild to start with and take it from there.
